Pitching Philosophies and Tips

Austin High School
Philosophies
1. Work fast and throw strikes.
2. The hitter should be out or on base in 3 pitches or less.
3. Every pitch should be thrown with the intention of getting the hitter out
(don’t waste pitches).
4. The best pitch in baseball is a 1st pitch strike. Get ahead and stay
ahead.
5. Don’t let the other team’s best player beat you. If he’s batting
.400 against everyone else, he probably will against you also.
Tips
1. You should be able to throw 3 pitches for a strike (fastball, curveball,
and changeup).
2. You should have confidence enough to throw any of the 3 pitches in any
count. If you don’t, work harder until you can.
3. Try and stay out of obvious fastball counts (3-1, 2-0, etc.)
4. The more strikes you throw the better your defense will be. Walks put the
fielders back on their heels and they are more likely to make errors.
5. You must show poise on the mound. Any sign of weakness gives the other
team confidence. Rise above bad calls, errors, etc.
